"CCP's Election, Not America's"

Currently, local council representatives' electionis in full swing in
China. Two workers,Liu Ping (laid off), and Wei Zhongping (employed)in
Xinyu city, Jiangxi run for the electionas independent candidates, however
both were threatened by police.

At 6:30PM, May 11, Liu Ping, Wei Zhongpingand supporters held up banners
that read"People's Representative to be Elected by People."They stood
before a supermarketand gave their election speeches.Over 200 people
listened to their speeches. They distributed flyers and interacted with the
voters.

About 8 pm Deputy Police Chief of the local bureauarrived with over 10
officers, filming the sceneand taking Liu's election materials and
posters. They told Liu that it is illegal to put up bannersand make a public
speech.

Yao Lifa, a local election specialist long suppressedby CCP's (Chinese
Communist Party) authoritiessaid that Liu and Wei did nothing wrongin their
election activities.

Yao: "It is legal for them to make a speech, distributematerials and answer
voters' questions. Its not illegalto put up banners to attract voters to
vote for them.No laws would prohibit them from doing so."

Yao said that the election activities organizedby the local election
committee were illegal. No election information was releasedand eligible
voters don't know how to vote.

Retired professor Sun Wenguangfrom Shangdong University, said that the
regimeactually controls the local elections.

Sun: "The elections were in fact controlled bythe local CCP authorities. The
CCP committees at various levels,e.g., county, village, school, etc.tightly
control the entire election process."

In 2007, Sun also run for the electionas an independent candidate, but met
with interferences by the authorities.

Sun: "They impose various impedances on you. They do not allow you to
distribute flyers;they tear down your posters. Moreover, they scare voters,
saying 『If you vote for Sun,we can still track you down by
handwriting,'although the election is anonymous. This way, you are separated
from the voters."

In the process of stopping Liu and Wei's speeches, the deputy police chief
said: "This is CCP's election,not America's election."

Yao says the deputy chief spoke the truth, revealing the real purpose of the
CCP's elections.

Yao: "I think he exposed the true face of the CCP.His remarks equated to
admitting the CCP's electionsas unscrupulous, phony, relentless,
anti-democratic,and illegal. It is like saying that the CCP's electionshave
always been just a formality."

Sun: "CCP elections are symbolic of its own nature."

Sun: "It is nothing but one-party monopoly, where the Party determines who
can runand who cannot. In reality, this is no different from direct
appointment. This election is of course different from America's.In the
U.S., everybody is entitled to electand to be elected."

May 11, Liu Ping told BBC Chinese over the phone, she was interfered with by
police, and was afraidof going out. She is worried she would disappear,as
the police are situated outside.
